Depending on your engine size you will need between 3 and 4 meters of suitable low stretch 10mm 3 strand or braided nylon rope. First you need to create a 'Figure of 8' loop in the middle of the length or rope, and then two bowlines, each one close to and either side of the 'figure of 8' loop as shown.
ALWAYS use a safety line which is attached from a strong point on your engine ( separate from the harness itself ) to a strong point on deck.
Remember to check your harness regularly for chaffing or wear and replace as necessary.
With the 'Figure of 8' loop positioned centrally on top of the engine casing, pass the first of the free ends down and around the top of the shaft just below the engine casing, and back up through the bowline loop as shown. Repeat with the remaining free end on the other side of the casing. There is usually sufficient space for a couple of lines to pass around the base of the engine section without interfering with steering movement.
Ensuring that the 'Figure of 8' loop remains centered on top of the motor, pull the free end down as firmly as possible and then fully tighten both loose ends through the bowlines, using one half hitch on each side to hold the harness in position as shown. It should now be almost impossible to move the 'Figure of 8' loop in any direction from its central position on the engine casing.
Tie two or three more half hitches, this time around both sections of the lines as shown. This last step further tightens the harness by pulling the two sections of the line together. Check again to ensure that the harness is secure and particularly that the 'Figure of 8' loop can not slip forwards or backward along the top of the engine casing. Retighten all knots if necessary.
